Adalaj Stepwell

Adalaj Stepwell

Welcome to a world of exquisite architecture and fascinating history at the flamboyant 15th-century Stepwell. Despite the passage of time, the intricate carvings on the pillars that support the five storeys have retained their grandeur, leaving visitors in awe. This stepwell is an excellent example of Indo-Islamic fusion architecture that percolated through the many step wells of the period. One of the fascinating features of the vav is its opening in the ceilings above the landing, allowing light and air to enter the octagonal well. However, direct sunlight never touches the steps, except at noon, ensuring that the temperature inside the well remains six degrees cooler than outside.

The stepwell has three entrances, with stairs leading to an underground storey that has an octagonal opening on top. The walls are adorned with ornamental carvings depicting mythological and village scenes, including the Ami Khumbor (a pot that contains the water of life) and the Kalp Vriksha (a tree of life) carved out of a single slab of stone. A small frieze of Navagraha (nine planets) towards the edge of the well is believed to protect the monument from bad omens. This stepwell is a testament to superior architecture and a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates the beauty and grandeur of India's past.
